Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to say that Wayside Advocacy Service has resumed seeing clients. Last year was a really difficult year for the Advocacy service but there is a new structure in place that will make the service more accessible to older people living in Hackney. We have moved premises to 11 Chatsworth Road (full address in signature below). Due to the lack of accessibility for older clients in the new premises, we will be seeing clients at agreed off site locations within the borough. Although we will still accept viable volunteers, the main focus will be on service delivery. At the moment, we will be providing Drop-In services (starting on Tuesday July 20, 2010) at: Marie Lloyd Day Care Centre 329 Queensbridge Road E8 3LA Drop-In Times Tuesdays: 16:00- 17:00 Peer Advocacy session (Focuses on collective issues) Wednesdays: 1300- 1600 One to one Advocacy support (appointments and drop in, first come first serve)
Homerton Library Homerton High Street E9 6AS Drop-In Times Thursdays: 1400- 1600 At the moment, this will be for individuals, but if there is enough interest I am hoping to make Peer Advocacy sessions available Please let me know if you would for me to send you a media pack, including yout full postal address. It includes new professional leaflets, A4 drop in posters, and referral form which can also be sent electronically. I would also like to take the time to thank you for your support over the last year. It has been a steep learning curve for me and I am elated to be working with organisations and people who are so passionate about supporting the community of Hackney! Kind Regards

Money will go to groups that have been overlooked before, says chief executive Peter Wanless.
The Big Lottery Fund will launch a new £200m grant fund for neighbourhood - based community groups. The fund, called Big Local, will award grants to voluntary groups in 50 geographical areas, which will be announced later this month. Peter Wanless, chief executive of the BLF, announced the new fund at the Charity Funding and the New Government conference in Westminster yesterday. He said the organisation would set up a new charitable trust to distribute the funds, and would look for partners to help run it. The money would go to groups that had been overlooked for funding in the past and that involved local residents in decision-making.

Despite promising not to reform the NHS, this Government has, like every other, decided a major reorganisation is just what we need now, at a reported cost of 1.7 billion.
However unlike every other reorganisation this one goes far further in terms of enabling or encouraging the private sector to be involved in both commissioniong of services and the delivery of services and is taking place in a time of unprecedented cuts to public spending.

This is a half day seminar, presented by Caroline Gooding and Natalie Salmon (both formerly with the Disability Rights Commission). Simone Aspis (Allfie) will give a guest presentation on education. There is more information about the presenters at the end of this invitation.
The new Equality Act will replace the Disability Discrimination Act, including the disability equality duties, beginning from October 2010. There has been a great deal of concern about what this might mean for Deaf and disabled people. This seminar provides an exciting opportunity for London’s disability organisations and disability and equality officers to explore with experts the practical effect of these changes.
The seminar will examine:
• How disability rights will be strengthened by the Equality Act, including the new restrictions on pre-employment health screening and new duties on schools;
• How disability will be addressed by the new equality duties;
• How disabled people in London can get the most out of the legislation;
• What public authorities need to do.
Who should attend?
We are inviting to the seminar, organisations of disabled people, other voluntary sector organisations who work with disabled people, local authority disability officers, other public sector officers who specialise in disability equality issues and any individuals interested.
Booking and cost of the event
We have decided to charge for this seminar. The price covers the half day seminar, hand out materials, a copy of a report of the seminar and refreshments including a light lunch. In the current economic situation we know that we need to be realistic about what we charge and we have set three levels of pricing which is as follows for:
Public sector organisations like local authorities, government departments The price is £75
Voluntary sector organisations and charities
The price is £40
We also have a limited number of free places for individuals or organisations of disabled people on limited budgets.
Our booking form allows you to indicate which price range applies to you as well as indicating if you have any access requirements.

Make it Local aims to encourage collaboration between local authorities and digital media developers, to provide innovative, web-based services for their communities.
Make it Local is encouraging local authorities to release publicly-owned data in a linked way which allows developers an opportunity to build new services using the information.
Local authorities hold significant amounts of public data– such as transport, carbon emissions, population and crime data – which may help to power a range of useful, digital services. In developing partnerships between local authorities and digital media businesses, NESTA wants to show the value to local authorities of releasing their data to developers who can make use of it.
NESTA is calling for digital agencies with ideas for new applications to approach their local authority and encourage them to enter.
NESTA is offering three local authorities up to £30,000 to spend with a digital media business in their area.
